Despite the continued emphasis on predictive project management (Waterfall), it's fascinating to see that the latest PMI-PMP training and certification is now 50% focused on agile or hybrid approaches. This prompted a quick refresher on the Agile Manifesto; because when combined with predictive project management, these approaches can create the perfect balance.
Agile Manifesto:
1. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools: People and their communication are more important than the specific processes or tools used. Teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication are more crucial …
2. Working software over comprehensive documentation: Functional software that meets users' needs is more valuable than extensive paperwork. Focus on delivering and improving working software and documenting the important stuff.
3. Customer collaboration over contract negotiation: Building good relationships with customers and involving them in the development process is more important than just sticking to contract terms. Flexibility and open communication are key, especially once a trusted partnership is in place.
4. Responding to change over following a plan: Being adaptable and open to new information or changes is more important than strictly following a pre-made plan. Prioritize what is best for the project at any given time. Change is inevitable, and rigid project change processes can be cumbersome and expensive.
Hybrid, Waterfall, or all-out Agile? It is important to note, not all projects are software based.
